One of the most significant benefits of establishing a company in Dubai is the ability to obtain UAE residence visas through your business - for yourself, your employees, and in some cases your family. For many entrepreneurs, this is the primary motivation for setting up a company in the first place. This guide explains how business-linked residence visas work, what types are available, and what the process involves.
Why Does a Business Give You Visa Rights?
Under UAE immigration law, a licensed company can sponsor employment visas for people working within the business. The company acts as a sponsor (kafeel) - it is legally responsible for the visa holder's presence in the UAE. As a business owner, you can either hold an investor visa (sponsoring yourself as a company owner) or an employment visa (if you are appointed as an employee or director of your company).
Types of Business-Linked Residence Visas
### Investor Visa (Partner/Owner Visa)
The investor visa is for shareholders and company owners. It grants a 2-year or 3-year residence permit and allows you to live in the UAE, open a personal bank account, apply for a driving licence, and sponsor family members for residence.
To qualify for an investor visa through a mainland company, you must be a shareholder and your company must hold a valid DED trade license with an active Ejari certificate.
### Employment Visa
If you are not a shareholder but work for the company - or if you prefer to hold a formal employment relationship with your own company - an employment visa is issued under the auspices of the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). The company applies for a work permit and then converts it to a residence visa.
### Long-Term Residency Options
The UAE also offers Golden Visas (5 or 10 years) for investors, entrepreneurs, skilled professionals, and outstanding students. If your business or personal investments meet the required thresholds, a Golden Visa provides long-term residence without requiring annual renewal.
How Many Visas Can My Company Issue?
The number of employment visas your company can sponsor - known as your visa quota - depends on two factors:
1. Your office space: The larger your office, the higher your initial quota. A mainland company with a private office can typically issue 4–6 visas initially. Companies with larger offices can issue more. 2. Labour card compliance: As you hire staff and demonstrate responsible employment practices, your quota can increase.
For virtual office holders, the visa situation is more complex. A virtual office address alone generally does not qualify for a large employment visa quota, since MOHRE assesses the physical capacity of your workspace. However, a virtual office with a proper Ejari certificate can support an investor visa for the company owner.
The Visa Process Step by Step
1. Obtain your trade license and Ejari - both are prerequisites for visa applications 2. Apply for an establishment card - this registers your company with MOHRE 3. Apply for labour quota approval - MOHRE grants your initial visa allocation 4. Submit the visa application - for each individual being sponsored 5. Medical fitness test - all visa applicants undergo a health screening at an approved UAE health centre 6. Emirates ID registration - biometric registration at an ICA typing centre 7. Residence stamp - issued in your passport, confirming UAE residence status
The entire process from license issuance to residence visa typically takes 3–6 weeks per person.
Family Sponsorship
Once you hold a UAE residence visa, you can sponsor family members (spouse and children) for residence visas. The minimum salary requirement for family sponsorship is typically AED 4,000 per month (or AED 3,000 for certain categories). Children are sponsorable up to the age of 18 (or older for full-time students and unmarried daughters).
